From Classroom to Career: Newton Abbot Students Plan for their Future

18th December 2024

Students from Coombeshead Academy have taken part in the BBC Bitesize Careers Tour this term.

Students from Years 7 to 10 participated in four hour long sessions led by BBC Talk Sport presenter Steve Forbes, who introduced three professionals in a ‘panel-style’ setup.  He was joined by Harry Moreton, charity development officer at Exeter City Football Club, Daniel Willers, creative director at Yellow Mouse Studios in Exeter and Yolanda Bekker Colman, resource scheduler at BBC Plymouth.

Each of the guests talked about their career pathway and covered a variety of topics, such as their relevant qualifications, personal anecdotes, advice on work experience and key soft skills for the workplace.  Students were then given the opportunity to ask lots of questions at the end of each of the sessions.

The Bitesize Careers Tour aims to focus on careers in a variety of sectors and helps to inspire students about opportunities that exist on their doorstep. The tour is designed to raise career aspirations in secondary pupils across the UK and give them practical advice on how they can pursue their dream job.

Helen Coulson, Headteacher at Coombeshead Academy, said:

“I am so proud of all the students that took part in the sessions. They were an absolute credit to the school and asked some really thoughtful questions to the panellists.  At Coombeshead Academy we are committed to providing all our students with a comprehensive planned programme of careers education, along with information, advice and guidance in partnership with external providers and professionals.”

Matthew Shanks, CEO of Education South West said:

“It’s great to hear that Coombeshead Academy took part in the BBC Bitesize Careers Tour as it’s never too early to start thinking about your future. At Education South West, we believe that giving students the correct careers education and guidance can improve their motivation to learn and help them to achieve.”
