In English we plan our curriculum to engage all students in the subject, to instil a love of reading- and a confidence in writing. We select our texts to be culturally, linguistically and conceptually rich to offer a deep learning experience. This includes texts from the Literary Canon as well as contemporary and international writers. Students are immersed in academic and imaginative language so that they can be ambitious in their own writing -both creative and transactional.

As specialist teachers we aim to challenge all students, irrespective of background, just outside their comfort zones. We want all students to develop team work and discussion skills allowing them to contribute to the wider community and to challenge the world around them. Our students will develop an understanding and empathy for other cultures, places and times as well as understanding the historical development of stories and language.

We utilise drama to promote confidence and an appreciation of performance- and encourage students to develop their own skills as writers, orators and critics. We understand the importance of advancing the life chances of all of our students and endeavour to develop skills in preparation for work and for KS5 learning.
